Turbulent Man Utd resigns after 16 years as chief executive
Richard Arnold has stepped down as CEO of Manchester United.
“Richard Arnold has decided to step down as CEO of Manchester United after 16 years at the club,” the club announced on its official website on Friday. Patrick Stewart will take on the role of interim CEO in addition to his existing role as General Counsel. Richard will step down after completing his application by the end of December,” the club said in a statement.
Joel Glazer, the club‘s chairman, said: “I would like to thank Richard for his outstanding service to the club over the past 16 years and wish him well for the future. We are fortunate to have Patrick Stewart’s deep knowledge and experience to provide stability and continuity on an interim basis while we search for a new CEO.”
Arnold concluded: “It has been an incredible privilege to serve this great football club for the past 16 years. Through the good times and the bad, the dedication of our staff and fans has been unwavering. I would like to thank them all for their loyalty and commitment and wish them all the best for the future of the club and everyone involved.”
United hasn’t been able to regain its former glory for a long time. Their form this season has been disappointing. A poor start to the season saw them slip below the top 10 in the league, and they’ve been mired in mid-table for some time. The team has been riddled with injuries and has rarely played at full strength. In the UEFA Champions League (UCL), they were also in serious trouble, finishing last with one win and three losses in four games.
It wasn’t just their performance that was in question. Even their own players were making noise. Jadon Sancho became embroiled in a feud with manager Eric ten Hagh after he left him out of the squad, and he took to social media to criticize him. The controversy led to United excluding Sancho from first-team training.
On the heels of the Mason Greenwood saga, Anthony’s personal life has also been plagued by scandal. Anthony was accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend. He denied the allegations, but the truth was contested by both sides. As the controversy escalated, Anthony was dropped from the Brazilian national team roster and did not play for United for some time.
Arnold officially took over as CEO in February 2022, succeeding his predecessor Ed Woodward. Prior to this season, he had pushed for the return of Greenwood, who had been sacked. Recently, the club was expected to undergo an internal shake-up over a shareholding issue, which ultimately led to Arnold stepping down as CEO.
