English professional soccer’s Tottenham Hotspur have been knocked out of the first leg of the Carabao Cup by fellow Premier League (EPL) side Fulham, despite introducing ‘Captain’ Son Heung-min as a late substitute.

Tottenham played Fulham 1-1 in regulation time before losing 3-5 on penalties in the second round of the 2023-2024 Carabao Cup at Craven Cottage in London, England, on Tuesday.

Organized by the English Football League (EFL), the Carabao Cup is a competition between teams from England’s top tier, the EPL, and the fourth tier.

Tottenham’s captain and centerpiece of the attack, Son Heung-min, came on as a 26th-minute substitute in the second half but was unable to prevent the defeat.

Tottenham, who started with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang up front, conceded an own goal in the 19th minute.

With the score still one goal down, Spurs started the second half with Giovani Rosselso off the bench in favor of Dane Scarlett.

Tottenham equalized in the 11th minute of the second half when Perisic headed home a left-footed cross from the left flank.

With the game still tied at 1-1, Tottenham brought on Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevic, and Pape Sarr in the 26th minute for Michy Batshuayi, Perisic, and Oliver Skipp, and replaced Manor Solomon with James Maddison in the 37th minute in an attempt to break the deadlock, but the game was not settled in 90 minutes.

In the ensuing penalty shootout, after Fulham’s Andreas Pereyra was the first to convert, Son stepped up to the plate for Tottenham and slotted his right-footed shot home.

The second kickers from each side, Raul Jimenez and Kuluczewski, also sent the ball into the net before Fulham’s third, Harry Wilson, converted.

However, Tottenham’s third kicker, Davinson Sanchez, had a shot saved by goalkeeper Marek Rodak, which proved to be the difference.

According to statistical specialist Fourscore.com, Son has a 6.6 rating, the fifth-highest on the team. For Tottenham, Maddison was the highest with a 7.2, while the highest rating for both teams was 8.5 for Fulham flanker Kenny Tetteh.
