Byun Jun-hyung Rescued Sangmu from Crisis

Sangmu won 88-84 against Changwon LG in the 2023-2024 KBL D League at LG Champions Park in Icheon on the 21st.

At Sangmu, Han Seung-hee and Park Jin-cheol dominated the basket as usual, scoring 49 points and 23 rebounds. Apart from that, however, the process and outcome of the game were clearly different from before. Overall, Sangmu’s performance remained subdued on LG’s promised defense compared to during the winning streak.

On top of that, Byun Joon-hyung, who has to carry the ball, assemble the game, and release the game, also tried nine field throws in the first half and succeeded in only two, leaving him sluggish.

Still, Sangmu was Sangmu. After 12 minutes of halftime, they focused their efforts and made LG difficult in the third quarter with 180 degrees of performance centered on Byun. Notably, Byun participated in the attack more aggressively than in the previous games, hunting for goals and perfectly capitalizing on his teammates’ chances.

Thanks to Byun Jun-hyung’s strong performance, Sangmu gained momentum to chase, and eventually, he was able to exchange the game, which was 17 points inferior, for the result of consecutive wins after a close game.

After the game, Byun Joon-hyung said, “It’s not that we didn’t play basketball well, but the shot didn’t go in. If the shot went in well, the first half would have gone well. As the players were on vacation, they didn’t have enough time to get it right, and they didn’t have enough training.”

By playing 43 minutes and 10 seconds, Byun had 18 points, six rebounds, nine assists, and four steals. 43 minutes and 10 seconds is the time when Byun spent the most time in the military.

Byun Joon-hyung said, “The coach also said he would replace me, but I expressed my intention to participate. I wasn’t in good condition, but I thought I would feel sorry for my teammates if I went to the extension to reveal the sign of replacement.”

“I’m adapting well, but I gained a lot of weight,” Byun said of his business life. “I can only eat instant food. There is nothing much to do even in the military. I think I gained weight because I relieve my stress by eating. Still, I’m going to lose everything before the season starts, so don’t worry too much.”

As mentioned earlier, Sangmu almost ended his winning streak since December 22. Up until the LG match, Sangmu had won 11 consecutive games.

To this, Byun said, “We should have worked hard from the start of the game. I think Stephen Curry stopped making successful 3-pointers in 268 games. Just as that record is being broken, we can’t shoot all of our shots. We just need to do better next time.”

Finally, it is Byun Jun-hyung, who delivered his goal in commerce.

“I want to stay healthy without getting hurt. As I have won consecutive games, I want to win in the Sangmu. Currently, I am a member of the Sangmu team, so I am focusing solely on the Sangmu team. If I return to the position of Chung Kwan-jang in the future, I will do my best to get good results,” Byun said.
