‘Accepting defeat’ coach Ko Hee-jin “GS played too well and we were shaky”

It was an inexcusable defeat.

The women’s professional volleyball team lost 0-3 (21-25 22-25 17-25) in the first round of the Dodram 2023-2024 V-League against GS Caltex at Jangchung Gymnasium in Seoul on Tuesday.

The team had lost its first game of the season, a 3-0 defeat against IBK IBK on April 17. The team attempted to win two straight on the day, but failed.

It was a bum room party. They poured in 20 kills, twice as many as their opponent’s 10. They took the lead, tied the game, and lost the game. Even when they needed to fight back, they were hampered by errors.

They were outscored 35.45%-43.88% in team offensive success rate and 22.73%-47.17% in receiving efficiency. They held an 11-9 advantage in blocking, but were 0-3 in serving.

Apogee spiker Megawatti Pertiwi (registered name Mega), the only non-Asian in the squad, was wasted. She was the only player on the team to score in double figures. She finished with 21 points (38.78% offense) with two blocks. No other player reached 10 points.

Giovanna Milana (real name Gia) was limited to eight points (25.81% offensive success rate) and committed seven errors. Outside hitter Park Hye-min added eight points (42.86% attacking success rate) with two blocks, and middle blocker Park Eun-jin added seven points (57.14% attacking success rate) with three blocks.

Meanwhile, GS Caltex was led by apogee spiker Giselle Silva (real name Silva) with a team-high 30 points (53.19% attacking 안전놀이터 success rate), including nine digs, three blocks, and two serves. She fell one dig short of the triple crown (three or more digs, blocks, and serves in a match). Outside hitter Kang So-hwi added three blocks to support 14 kills (47.83% attacking success rate).
