Doosan goes all out for Korea to win Czech nuclear plant project
Doosan Group invited Czech government officials to the Partnership Day event at Zofin Palace in Prague, Monday (local time), to convince the European country to select Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) as the preferred bidder in July for its nuclear power plant construction project, the company said Wednesday.The Czech Republic plans to build up to four nuclear power plants in Dukovany and Temelin by 2036.In collaboration with Doosan Enerbility and Daewoo E&C, KHNP is competing with EDF, a French government-owned electric utility company, to win the 30 trillion won ($22 billion) project.KHNP is trying to defeat EDF by offering lower prices and showing its ability to complete the construction as planned. The Korean nuclear power plant operator also offered to supply APR1000 reactor, a redesigned version of locally-developed APR1400 reactor, to meet the Czech Republic’s demand.“Based on our successful supply of main components for the United Arab Emirates’ Barakah nuclear power plant, we will do our best to win the first overseas nuclear power plant construction order in 15 years,” said Doosan Group Chairman Park Jeong-won, who hosted the Partnership Day event. “We will continue our investments in the Czech energy and machinery industries.”
Once KHNP obtains the order, Doosan Enerbility will supply reactors and steam generators. In addition, steam turbines for the new nuclear power plants will be made by Doosan Skoda Power, a Czech turbine manufacturer acquired by the Korean business group in 2009.Doosan Enerbility will also provide its non-carbon power generation technologies to Doosan Skoda Power for the Czech Republic to become the outpost of the European non-carbon power generation industry.During the event, Doosan Enerbility signed memorandums of understanding with Czech companies, such as Skoda JS, MICO, Vitkovice and ZAT, for their cooperation in potential supply of components for new nuclear power plants.On Tuesday, Park visited Doosan Skoda Power in Plzen to inspect its production lines.He also visited Doosan Bobcat EMEA in the Czech town of Dobris, which oversees the construction equipment maker’s business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
