Grand Sierra Resort owner Alex Meruelo and University of Nevada President Brian Sandoval also announced their exploration of a partnership with the Nevada men’s basketball team, which can make the stadium their home upon completion.
“The vision is to transform GSR into a destination where communities, sports and entertainment come together,” Meruelo said.
“Nevada University Reno is excited to explore the opportunity to partner with Alex Meruelo and the Grand Sierra Resort while developing a state-of-the-art stadium and entertainment district unprecedented in northern Nevada,” Sandoval said. “The new stadium will include the convenience of creating a game experience and fans second to none.”
Beyond the stadium, a comprehensive beautification of Grand Bay is planned, which will include golf facilities and entertainment venues, scenic trails and attractive water shows.
The 800-room hotel tower also plans to set up at least one parking lot in response to the expected demand so that new facilities can be accessed smoothly.
Recognizing the need to support staffing growth that is vital to the success of these ambitious projects, the plan will include the construction and construction of approximately 300 affordable riverfront residential units.
“This is an incredible historic investment by Mr. Meruelo and a real turning point for our community,” said Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve. “It’s a huge victory for our citizens, a victory for the University of Nevada, a victory for tourism. Thank you for your vision and faith in our great community.”
Meruelo said, “We have a strange torrent coming to us.” “This will not only redefine the Grand Sierra Resort, but also take Reno to new heights in entertainment and sports. We recognize and value the support and enthusiasm of the community as we begin this journey together.”
