Korean PGA Tour star Im Sung-jae said Tuesday he’d like to go up against two-time major champion Xander Schauffele in the singles match at the upcoming Presidents Cup. Im will be one of four Korean players for the International Team, made up of non-European and non-American players, as they take on the favored United States at the biennial match-play competition. This year’s Presidents Cup will tee off Thursday at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Canada. The players will play in tandems on the first three days in fourball and foursome matches, and they will each play in one-on-one matches Sunday.

In an interview with the PGA Tour, Im singled out Schauffele, world No. 2 who won the PGA Championship and the Open Championship this year, as the opponent he’d like to face the most come Sunday. “He’s a great guy. Every time I had a chance to play with him, I learned a lot from him and I felt comfortable,” Im said. “I think it’d be fun to play against him this time.” This will be 한국을 Im’s third consecutive appearance at the Presidents Cup. “I am so happy to have made the team, and I can’t wait for the competition,” Im said. “The 12 of us are here to win this week. I think that’s the mindset for everyone going into this event.”

The U.S. has won 12 of the 14 Presidents Cups so far, with the International Team picking up its only victory in 1998 and the two sides ending up in a tie in 2003.Im said scoring as many points as possible from the first day will be crucial.” Since this is a team event, having good chemistry will be important,” Im said. “I’ve played the course a couple of times, and par-3s and par-4s here feel a bit long. I will have to hit my mid-iron and long-iron shots well here to put my partner in a good spot.” Asked which teammate he would pick to make the title-clinching putt, Im said: “I think it’d be a nervous moment for everyone, and I’d be really happy if I get to make the putt for our victory. But even if it’s someone else, I’d be just as happy.”
