I’m aiming to recover my self-esteem! Samsung’s Lee Won-seok
Lee Won-seok made headlines when he declared his early challenge during the 2021 draft. And he wore Samsung’s uniform, beating Ha Yoon-ki and Lee Jung-hyun to the top overall honor.
Lee Won-seok made his professional debut with high expectations, but his growth is somewhat disappointing after three seasons. Lee Won-seok, who is in his fourth season, is sweating more hard than anyone else to reverse this evaluation. “Rookie” met Lee Won-seok.
*The interview was conducted in August and was published in the September 2024 issue of Rookie.
Is Lee Won-seok’s height thanks to Moon Jung-hyun?
Lee’s father is Lee Chang-soo, who used to play professional baseball for Samsung, Hyundai Mobis and LG. Lee Chang-soo, who played a total of 527 games from the 1997-1998 season to the 2010-2011 season, was considered a master of self-management while continuing his active career until the age of 42.
As Lee Won-seok, the son of Lee Chang-soo, meeting with basketball seemed inevitable, but it was not. According to Lee Won-seok’s story, when he was young, he was so careless that he did not think of exercising.
“It was June 11, 2011. I went to Everland with my schoolmates and I started playing basketball after that. Originally, my parents said that they would never let me play basketball. I wasn’t even athletic. I liked soccer when I was young, but I spent more time falling than running around. So I thought I wouldn’t exercise, but somehow I started. Actually, when I was young, I didn’t have to go to an academy and didn’t have to do my homework, so I just did it because I liked it.”
Basketball, which was enjoyed to avoid studying, has become the most precious thing to Lee Won-seok. Lee Won-seok says that he still enjoys basketball to this day after entering the professional arena.
“Even if I go back, I think I’ll play basketball again. There are times when I wanted to stop when I was in sixth grade. But I feel like I’ve already come too far to stop, so I think the idea of doing a little more is still coming. I still enjoy basketball.”
Currently, Lee stands at more than two meters tall. However, he was not exceptionally tall when he started playing basketball. After going through stormy growth in his middle school years, Lee has gradually gained extraordinary stature.
“Before that, I was never particularly tall. I was about 173 cm when I went to middle school, but by the time I was in second grade, I grew to 180 cm. Then by the time I graduated, I was 197 cm tall.”
In sum, Lee grew to nearly 26 centimeters in height during his junior high school years alone. In addition, Lee Won-seok also told a special episode with Moon Jung-hyun during this period.
“When I was a junior in middle school, I went to Ulsan for a field training, and I once played against Hwabong Middle School where (Moon) Jung-hyun was. At that time, Chung got caught in his clothes and broke his finger, so he put a pin in it. I was lying down for two or three months and grew up to 10 centimeters tall. Chung still brags that I got taller thanks to him.”
“And I got COVID in 2022, and I still grew up then. It hurt so much that I’ve been lying down and sleeping a lot, and that’s why I think I grew up. When I went for my autopsy, I got 2m 4.5cm, but now I’m not exactly sure how tall I am. From the point when I get over 2m, I can’t measure myself with a normal machine. As a result, my chances of naturally measuring height have decreased.”
Lee Won-seok grew taller thanks to Moon Jung-hyun, but his play style is somewhat different from that of traditional center. Coach played a big role in this situation when he was a middle school student.토토사이트 추천
“I’ve never played orthodox five times since I was young. When I started playing basketball when I was in elementary school, there were at least two players taller than me. I was also tall when I was in third grade, but one of my classmates was about 2 meters tall. And the coach didn’t emphasize that I should only watch the center because I was tall, but gave me an opportunity to improve my strengths and play various games. In a way, it was the coach who set the current style.”
Lee Won-seok challenged the draft by applying for an early entry in 2021 when he was a student at Yonsei University. At the time, Lee Won-seok was honored with the first overall pick by Samsung, which held the first-place pick. It was a bold nomination from Samsung, which considered Lee Won-seok’s future growth potential high.
“I think it’s already been almost three years, but I wanted to do it on a bigger stage with confidence. I really didn’t expect the first place. I was a little bit nervous when I thought about it now. It was an honor to be chosen like that, and now the title of first place comes as a bit of a burden.”
